It is impossible to describe Burgwin Studios without first telling of its origins. So make yourself at home, and allow me to introduce you to the most interesting and delightful one street town in America-a town where there are more churches than people, entertaining is still an art, and time is marked by planting and hunting seasons.
Lowndesboro, AL, is a town overflowing with just as much charm as history. Legend has it that when Union Gen. Wilson was making his way through the South and burning everything in his path, the town doctor met the troops with a story of a small pox epidemic in the town, thus saving the historical homes and buildings. Because of these preserved relics, Lowndesboro has a very regal, timeless aura. Margaret Mitchell was describing the small town South perfectly in Gone with the Wind when she writes of "moss hung kingdoms". The area also has a rich Native American heritage, with the Creek Indian "Holy Ground" being close by. It is here that the Battle of the Holy Ground took place, where William Weatherford (Chief Red Eagle) supposedly rode his horse off the embankment and into the Alabama River, escaping with his life. Ann Burgwin Faulkner, a Lowndesboro, AL native and graduate from Auburn University's Fashion Merchandising program, creates one of a kind jewelry designs that flow from a heart that loves all things wild and free. An agricultural area and hunting destination for many across the South, it is from this rich black belt soil that Burgwin Studios has grown.
Each piece of jewelry draws from natural elements, combining the elegance of Southern gentry with an earthy, bohemian flare-all into one jewelry design. Anyone who has spent any time in any small Southern town can attest that the culture revolves around the art of story telling. Whether made with antique findings or the antlers used from last season's bounty, each design has it's own story to tell. Most of the materials are found in antique markets around the Southeast. Each piece is unique and handcrafted, and I invite you to take part in the story by exploring my jewelry designs!
